The underworld is fruitful because of, literally, its occult geometry. By geometry, I mean that for surface creatures, the world expands as the square of distance: the surface world is measured by area. However, the underworld’s contents are encompassed by the cube of distance: it contains volume(s), and the human mind has difficulty coming to terms with this inherent vastness.
Now, the heavens contain the same geometric hugeness as the underworld, but they are observable, and mostly empty, and thus benign. But the underworld is entirely hidden, literally occult. It is the combination of hugeness and mystery that makes it fruitful, something it shares with the oceans.
